Typo... that should read 7 MILES. Either way, the point is students/Eastsiders can already catch a Major League game by driving relatively the same length of time, so why would they drive out to Glendale to see a much lower level of baseball? I'm just so confused by this. At what point is the distance worth it? Are you insinuating that we just shouldn't have baseball? And, why? This is one of the most annoying arguments I've heard in awhile. If the baseball field was only 5 minutes away, would you be happy? And would you stop trashing Geiger on every medium? You're accomplishing nothing besides whining.

I'm sure the Panther baseball players' parents and girlfriends are thrilled, but us core fans are still left with a basketball team playing in a D2-caliber facility for the foreseeable future and still no football team. Yeah that football team isn't happening anytime soon...if ever. You're going to need to move on from that dream.

So, people who are not interested in football are not "core" fans?
This is great for track and baseball. Now let's just completely refit the KC into a good basketball arena. I like this idea -- return to the campus and then remodel the KC. This could help build tradition.

It’s great that baseball and track & field are getting new facilities. It’s something that should have happened 22 years ago when the university moved to NCAA Division 1 athletics. But in terms of building fan support, growing brand recognition, and generating revenue this does absolutely nothing.
Our men’s basketball program, our only revenue sport, has major issues in terms of its arena and practice facility. It currently plays in one of the worst arenas in all of Divison 1 college basketball and has to share its practice courts with intramural sports.

This baseball facility is a great idea. I think the thought behind it in the past was, we would have a nice, new field and facility, one that could draw others to rent it from UWM. Which would in turn and time make money if even just enough to make baseball self-efficient as a sport.

This could help build tradition. And where will basketball and volleyball be played while the renovations are going on? i'm not asking the question to be snarky. When Loyola renovated their arena, if memory serves me correctly, there was some disruption and they had to play games and matches in another facility. What are the Panthers options if they decide to renovate Klotsche rather than build a separate arena?

Which would in turn and time make money if even just enough to make baseball self-efficient as a sport. Good point, i totally spaced on that point. Nice facilities for baseball and track do seem to have many groups wanting to use them for events and such. Rockford, IL, where I am from, has a very sub-par minor league baseball stadium, but one that is better than most college and high schiool venues and they let summer leagues and colleges play important games there sometimes. And a local high school by us has a state of the art track and field complex that is owned by the school district and the city that gains revenue from non school use. So its something to think about. Probably wont make UWM big bucks but it could make some money to use for the team if done well.

Not so fast, says Glendale.... www.jsonline.com/sports/panthers/uwm-eyes-land-in-glendale-for-baseball-track-and-field-facilities-h570d9t-171216851.htmlI have some insight into this as I used to work for Glendale. The property in question is in a TIF district. I am not sure if that TIF is paid off (it might very well be) but I know most TIF districts do not (and financially cannot) allow for non-taxable land within that district otheriwse it screws up the payoff of the bonds. Even if the TIF is paid off, this land is supposed to be a tax generating peice of property. Sitting vacant it generates $21,656.78 in annual tax revenue for Glendale, the School District, Mke County, MMSD, and MATC. With development that number could quadruple. Why would Glendale agree to remove one of its largest undeveloped parcels of land from the tax rolls? UWM purchasing this is bad for Glendale and I agree with the City Administrator, its not the right fit for this property. Its near nothing so it generates no economic impact (unlike that thesis project for the land on North Avevue and Cambrige, which would have been a great catalyst for more redevelopment). You would think that UWM would have at least had some discussions with Glendale about this proposal before going public with these plans. This isn't Ohio State where the university gets whatever it wants, no questions asked.

Why not approach the County about using Kern Park? Its barely used and could use a facelift.

Kern Park is used constantly during the summer.

When's the last time a UWM AD secured a 7-figure donation?

Why spend that donation (unless it was part of the agreement) on baseball and track? Why not put it towards a basketball arena or renovations of the Klotsche Center?

Because the baseball facility is a more pressing concern. Basketball is a long-term problem that's in its very planning stages, and they've already got a facility that at least we own.

And this way we have a place to split athletics between facilities for practice. The Klotsche will be used for basketball, volleyball and swimming/diving once this "field house" is built. Track, Soccer and Baseball will not have to fight for practice time with volleyball and basketball. It'll help with recruiting for all sports.
