This is a VERY rough sketch of an idea I've had for a few months now, but couldn't think of a way to properly execute it until recently. I wouldn't even say that's what I've done here since I literally just finished it up and I can already see a few things I'm going to do differently once I digitize it. For the most part, I think animal print logos are a dime-a-dozen, but most schools aren't in states that look like an animal's paw.

If you can give that a little bit of dimension like a lot of the new logos i am seeing that would look really cool. Can't wait to see the finished product. I love to mess around with graphic art stuff too so seeing some of the stuff you have come up with has been awesome for me. Are/were you an art major or is it more of a hobby?

Thanks... I don't have an art background, I just happened to have a knack for design. I just wish I would've figured that out before I chose my major, let alone started college. Of course, then I probably would've went to MIAD instead of UWM. ;D If nothing else though, it has turned into a nice little hobby job for me. Anyway, I made a few tweaks to my drawing. Most notable is the star where Milwaukee would be. This still isn't close to any final product though.

With how its coming along so far i am not doubting how awesome its going to look for a second. I really like the paw/state of wisconsin mash-up. Have you played around with making it a little more shaped like the state while still trying to keep it looking as much like a paw as you can? I will try to find a few more examples, but one example is washington state. Wash state isnt my favorite example because i am a little more in favor of a more detailed logo that incorporates both. Anyway its just a thought. Either way love what you have got going here. Cant wait to see the finished project. I will have to bounce some of my ideas off of you. I too mess around with this sort of thing all the time. Haha. Keep up the good work. Attachments:

Hey, so I messed around with your rough draft a little just to show you what I meant. I hope its not overstepping any bounds. Just wanted to see what you thought of it. I am sure you would be able to do a much better job based on some of the stuff of yours that I have seen. Attachments:

So i think we should talk to one of the local apparel merchandisers that have products in the bookstore and see about getting some cool shirts made. We would probably need the schools permission but how cool would it be to have some throw back faded tees with one of your green gulls logos on it. I would buy that so fast. Or ur old retro uwm interwoven 60s/70s text logo. Another one i would buy.

If anything I'm thrilled that another person understands what I'm trying to do...especially since there's not too many of you. ;D As far as your mock up... I will say the reason it took so long for me to put this logo to paper is because while the goal is to get it in the general shape of the state, it still has to look like a paw first and foremost. Otherwise it comes across as mangled and deformed, and doesn't convey the swift, powerful image you'd want team with the Panther as its mascot to have. I'm glad you liked my Green Gull stuff, but I'm assuming you're referring to the stuff I made for TeamBuilder? That was more speculative (i.e. What if we became WSU in the 50s instead of UWM). I do have some actual throwback/fauxback stuff right here though if you're interested: s1209.photobucket.com/albums/cc382/illwauk/Green%20Gulls/

They should make throwbacks using these logos. Its cool to have new stuff that keeps your history alive. It would also prolly help to inform a lot of people that dont even know we were the green gulls or milwaukee state. It would start conversations and promote interest and intrigue about our school and our athletics.
As for the logo, how do you feel about It being a cross between the two. Less defined but still more of a resemblance of the shape of Wisconsin. As far as the image i came up with do you really get mangled from it? I almost thought it looked kinda tough, but thats just my and my friends opinion.
I appreciate your feedback. It was kinda fun to come up with. I have plans of trying to come up with a U of M text logo and/or a UM logo. Just for the heck of it.
Can't wait to see your more completed versions. I think it would be fun to bounce ideas back and forth with this sort of thing. I have always been the most intrigued by this kind of thing. Glad i met someone else who enjoys it too.

Not to mention, a Panther has only 4 visible fingers in a paw print, I believe. My logo is intended to be an actual paw rather than just a print (like, say, Clemson)... I posted the picture I was working with below. I suspect the discrepancy might come from the fact that the panther isn't an actual species of animal, but rather a catch-all term for members of the genus panthera (jaguars and leopards) that have melanism which makes their coat all black. That said, panther is also one of the many names for the puma concolor which are also called pumas, cougars, mountain lions and golden panthers. Interestingly enough the puma concolor can't get melanism and only have solid, golden-brown coats. This is also the only one of the variety that's native to Wisconsin and the United States. Since your photo appears to be from Sarasota County, Florida; I suspect it's a print from a Florida panther, the sub-species which inspired the name of the NHL team.

There aren't any current Clemson logos that have a 5th finger. Additionally, I've never seen a panther paw logo with 5 fingers. In short, despite your knowledge of the "panthera" genus, your logo is creative, but won't happen.

Dang the part i didnt like the most on mine was the little finger/toe on the right side but looking at the picture you posted his is kinda like that too. Haha. Whataya know.
Illwauk: have you ever tried talking to someone about the possibility of additional/alternate logos? I really wis they would consider adding some. Most teams/schools have a mascot logo, a text logo (for sports, not like the uwm one), and a text & mascot logo. A good number of teams also have an alternate mascot logo, and/or abbreviated/shortened/simplified text logo.
You have come up with a lot of great ideas for stuff like secondary/alternate logos, and I was just wondering if you have ever approached anyone official with any of those ideas or concepts?
