I *think* this post on the Butler board is (purposefully) veiled in sarcasm but mascaraing as a a very real point. Is Butler TOO BIG for the Horizon League? (personally, I think not- if they win the next 3 League Championships outright (season and Tourney- God forbid they ever go undefeated in this League again!!! (that is inexcusable- and everyone but Butler is to blame)), then, maybe I will reconsider the merit of this argument).
The poster claims sarcasm, but it doesn't sound that way to me. It sounds like he got ahead of himself and his fellow "varsity" posters brought him back down to earth (so he claimed sarcasm).
We should move to the Big East. No one in this pitiful conference poses a threat to us for the next dozen years or so. Seriously, these other teams are all cream puffs. Look who is competing with us for the Horizon League title:
Wright State: What have they ever done? Have they ever won an NCAA game? Nope. They have like 1 good win in their history of D1 basketball. But hey, they won a D2 national championship like 30 years ago.
Green Bay: Biggest bunch of chokers I've ever seen. Their coach blames everyone but himself and they haven't won a postseason game outside the state of Wisconsin in about a dozen years.
Milwaukee: Bunch of has beens that were only ever successful because of Bruce Pearl. They've returned to mediocrity since he left and they will stay there for a while. Enjoy your wins over Concordia and SIU-edwardsville ever year!
Cleveland State: They've had one fluke year in the past....ever. With our forthcoming dominance they will sink back to the nothingness they crawled out of. They may see .500 a few times though.
Valparaiso: Go back to the summit league, because the Horizon is too much for you. Still riding the fame of a lucky shot in the NCAA's, if you consider "riding" being a mediocre team year after year
Detroit: Also a bunch of has-beens that are starting to believe in the "conspiracy" that Butler is being given the championship every year. Maybe they should concentrate on having fewer single digit win seasons. But hey, they have a bunch of guys that were drafted in the NBA 30 years ago!
Loyola: They suck, always have and always will be a tiny speck of dust on NCAA landscape. Again, they can hang their hats on winning the NCAA championship like 50 years ago!!
UIC: Commuter school of a bunch of people that don't care about winning basketball, including their players and coach. League doormat for years to come, along with....
Youngstown: Do they even have a basketball team anymore, or are they just running out 5 volunteers each night? Better suited for the NEC or some similar terrible league.
All these teams and fans should be crying right now because Butler is going to run the table year after year after year until the league folds due to lack of competition.
PS: Butler, upon entering the Big East (joke, joke, joke- there is NO WAY they would survive), or more realistically, the A-10 or C-USA, may be in for a rude awakening... as evidenced by our Horizon League Tourney Semifinal with them- having the League offices/HQ in your backyard can go a looong ways in helping protect your golden goose status.
That wouldn't be the case for BU in any of these other league's smoe of their fans may be fantasizing about (to be fair, I have heard people on this board speculating that we join the Big 10 or Big 12- are you kidding me? Maybe... in 2047 when we have football and have built a student/fan sports culture culture that would fit in with those conferences).
For now, I am absolutely thrilled with our league- other than Youngstown who can't seem to find their head (because it's in their...), we have some impressive competitors who have proven to be competition enough to prepare us for the big boys (rem. that Boston College player's comment to James Wright (or another Panther player) in 2005- "Welcome to the Big East, buddy". Hahahahaha. We all know how that game ended up..
