We are screwed with YSU. They broke the bank with their new football coach and his staff a few months back. They have no money to buy out Slocum and start over. They will limp through the last few years of his contract and try again. Until they are willing to spend a few bucks on other sports besides football, they are going to be the laughingstock of the HL.
I know we added them because they added enough sports to help the HL outside of basketball, but they have been an anchor to this league since they joined. The best thing the HL could do is look for a new member and boot them out. It won't happen but it's what should happen if we ever want to be a consistent multi-bid league in the post season.
Every other team in the league has brought something to the table from a basketball standpoint. Butler, Milwaukee and Cleveland with recent tourney runs. UIC was relevant not too long ago. Green Bay and Valpo had memorable tournament experiences within our memory. Wright State and Detrioit are solid. And Loyola, if nothing else, is the only league member that has an NCAA Basketball Championship trophy (until Monday, possibly ).
But YSU? They are the basketball outlier. Imagine if we could trade them for, say, St. Louis?
"She would constantly try to throw [Coach Jeter] off and create distractions," said another source who worked in the athletic department and no longer is at UWM. "All the time. It was bad. I felt bad for him all the time. I told him, 'You're a bigger man than I am.' It was brutal. Sabotage was in the cards." -- From the JS story, March 17, 2016
SLU used to be in the HL (1981-91). They really want to get out of the A-10 and into the MVC. I wonder if they would consider the HL now that Butler has shown that you can build a potential NC from our level.
