It doesn't really concern me, but IMHO is was a poor decision. Maybe there were extenuating circumstances, but it isn't like this Press Conference was a surprise........the players should have made sure they had no conflicts and they ALL should have been there - but that is just me.

Tuesday (and Thursday), 10 to 3, is the most popular class time. Probably not the best time to get players (students) there -- but it probably was picked as the best time for the coach, the athletic director, the Chancellor (probably the busiest calendar) and the media (much later than 2 p.m. is too late for tv news that starts at 4 p.m. in Milwaukee).

I know what you are saying CreamCity, and I agree (about the general students), but I HIGHLY DOUBT that the players have classes between say.....1:00ish and 5:00ish.........ANY day of the week.

You think??? I would think that'd be the best time for them....can't see them wanting to get up for early morning classes, or wanting to take up their nights with classes either. I certainly could be wrong, jmho

I certainly could be wrong, jmho Players don't really have that option of being picky about class times if they practice in the afternoons.

That's true, I didn't think of it that way! Good insight!

I certainly could be wrong, jmho Hack is 100% correct, players are forced to take classes whenever they can - with the BIG caveat of NO afternoon classes. If that means getting up early or taking night classes, so be it.........trust me on this one!

It all makes sense to me now. I just never thought of that (gee-I guess practice is a little important huh??!!) I was always under the false impression that they got special treatment. Glad I could be straightened out in the matter!! ;D

I was more concerned when Joah did not particpate in Midnight Madness and that turned out to be nothing. I think it's a non story that he wasn't at the press conference. I'm glad to hear WW was there.

I don't think practice is until a bit later in the day (say 3). Last semester, Boo Davis was in a class of mine that started at 12:30 and went until 1:45, and he was there nearly every class. So the possibility exists that some really were in class yesterday. As for Joah, I think he was hurt in practice/drills/whatever the other day and his jaw is wired shut or something, apparently laid up in bed.

I will admit, there are some exceptions (as some classes are only offered once a semester, or once a year - and are NEEDED for various reasons), but in Boo's case, the class ended at 1:45 (still before practice typically starts)........he then had to hurry straight to the Klotche for practice. I would be HIGHLY surprised if any players actually had classes that started between 1:30 and 5:30..........in the "old" days, classes in this time frame were unheard of.
EDIT: On a side note, it is good to hear that Boo was in class on a regular basis!

Zoofan, instructors at state campuses are by law not allowed to give special treatment to any students. That means that if other students don't get off for press conferences, basketball players better not.
But any athletes (and cheerleaders and pep band) can get excused from class for games, including days before and after for road trips -- but they have to give instructors a form with all the dates to be signed when the semester starts.
Because of that, some instructors choose to give the same benefit to students with reasons related to other campus activities, if they also give the dates in writing at the start of the semester. So few can do so.
Also, athletes (and cheerleaders and etc.) get to sign up for classes first, no matter their class year or letter of the alphabet, I think. Students on this list know what a great benefit that is these days, with the budget cuts causing so many classes to be cut.
