You're right Milt, the SA Segregated Fees for student orgs can only be used on certain things. That year we racked in huge amounts (3rd highest with UWM Football and UWM Muslim Assoc. at the top). Each student has $25 dollars of their tuition to dedicate to the org. of their choice (in $5 allotments).
Way too many students don't even know about this and don't put their seg. fees to good use. We pushed hard during elections week along with pushing for the MKE party, and they helped us in return. Many don't take part in any orgs. but do go to bball games so the SBGC is a great default for them to get a possible return on their choice in the end.
I recall our seg. fees that year were over $800. The general idea of the use rule is that it pretty much has to benefit the entire student body (or something like that) because we're in the Service category I think...and cannot be used for profit. The end result were all the gold headbands purchased and handed out to the student section. The T-shirts that year were mostly out of pocket and pre-ordered by members so we knew we could recoup the expenses fronted. Any $ over was put towards more shirts resulting in less and less out of pocket expenses.
That's pretty much it...
The moral of the story...don't just talk about stuff, get out and make it happen!

honestly i think the best idea for shirts is for someone to come up with a design that everyone likes...this next year nothing to do with a paticular player or coach.....design it. then it would probably be best to go through the SB&G club. use its logo, but no UWM Logo unless you want to pay an outrageous liscense fee, use its membership to help sell and distribute the shirts. believe me, we could have sold 10 times more shirts if we whould have marketed them at all. in return sb&g members get a discounted price. the person or people clever enough to make the shirt get to do all of the printing work and orders (which takes alot of time, trust me) and get the profit that comes from it. which is enough for a couple beers and some bus trips to games. the only problem with not using a player or coach is the fact that we cant use the UWM or Panther Logo....maybe larissa knows but how much does it cost to legally use that logo?
maybe we should just help the bookstore come up with a CHEAP (i bet it will be more than the$10 for the homeboy shirts) shirt that all the students can easily get, and wear to the games. thats just my idea.

Segregated fees now have a lot of restrictions on what they can or cannot be used for. One of those restrictions is gifts. SBGC could purchase shirts from segregated fee money if they were collecting money from those getting shirts or if the shirts had specific event information on them to publicize an event. Due to the Southworth case, we have had to completely revamp the way segregated fees are utilized, and we do understand that this makes it difficult for student organizations to use the funds they have obtained. If anyone does have specific questions on how SBGC could utilize the funds they have, please feel free to ask. Throughout the entire year, I've offered to meet with student organizations to answer any questions that org has about finances.

I would probably be willing to pay $30-$40 for a shirt as Craig described.
As far as SBGC cash from the segregated fees, Bryan and Milt hit it right on the head. It's not as easy as telling the school to give us the money and then doing whatever the hell we want with it. If I remember correctly it was a headache just to get the head/wrist bands.
Back in the day SBCG was nothing more than a front to basically "have a few drinks" and go to the hoops games. It would be nice to have somthing a little more organized however in case any of you didn't notice things have improved. It went from 10 of us being the obnoxious drunks who were the only ones standing at the KC, to an unfortunate statement by Bryan at a midnite madness a few years ago, to having the student section take up a whole side of the Cell. Thats quite an acomplishment right there.

maybe what we need to do is just to push really hard a couple weeks before people vote for segregated fees. We do have a former alderman candidate among us I know he can lobby a few votes. As for shirts I think we should just get a few of us together and think up some ideas over a few adult beverages ;D I know I can get pretty creative after a few!

heres some free legall advice when making shirts.
you can use the word milwaukee. but you cant use the words milwaukee basketball. however, it is legally viable. the school goes by wisconsin-milwaukee panthers. but..........
to avoid the whole mess you get creative. for example. put the word milwaukee on a picture of a basketball. the two go together!
how bout this. a basketball with the word milwaukee on it. and the basketball is drinking a beer! YES! patent pending!
how bout this. a picture of the crowd from the det game. make it look at cool like the bruce pic and then on the back put 6th Man! YES! patent pending!
how bout this. put the basketball drinking beer on front. and then put HOPS (like beer hops) of Milwaukee! YES! Pantent Pending!
alright, i gotta go drop out of school and open up a tee shirt industry.

Students can vote April 12 and 13 in the Student Association Elections. Polls will be located in Sandburg, EMS, and the Union. You can determine which student organizations you would like a portion of your segregated fees to go to, and also elect your representatives in the Student Association.

Dunnz,
The beer drinking basketball only works if he is toasting with a Beer stein. Milwaukee afterall is the German Athens.
