Santa Clara, Calif. - Jim Howell broke a Santa Clara drought with three consecutive baskets to lift the Broncos to a 66-64 victory over UW-Milwaukee in the opening game of the Cable Car Classic Monday night.
Howell scored his final basket on a dunk with 57 seconds left to make it 65-62.
Adrian Tigert made a reverse layup for UWM with 43 seconds remaining, and the Panthers had possession after a time-out with 16.7 seconds left. But after a shot by Ed McCants was blocked, Santa Clara (8-5) rebounded and Doron Perkins made one of two free throws with 6.8 seconds left to account for the final score.

SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Kyle Bailey scored 18 points and J.R. Patrick added 11 as Santa Clara claimed an exciting 66-64 win over the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee in the first game of the Cable Car Classic Tuesday night at the Leavey Center.
The Panthers (5-4) could not overcome a 22-5 scoring deficit at the foul line and 27.3 percent shooting in the second half. UWM led by as many as eight points in the first half and still held a 62-61 lead following a Dylan Page hoop with 2:36 remaining.
The Broncos (8-5) grabbed a 63-62 lead with 2:13 remaining on a dunk by Jim Howell and pushed the lead to 65-62 on a Howell basket on a runout with 55 seconds remaining. Adrian Tigert scored with 43 seconds remaining to pull the Panthers within 65-64.

Santa Clara guard Doron Perkins didn't have a difficult time separating his offense from his defense Monday in the 37th Annual Cable Car Classic.
Perkins missed all six of his field-goal attempts, but he had three steals and blocked two shots in the final 16.7 seconds to help the Broncos beat Wisconsin-Milwaukee 66-64 at the Leavey Center.
Santa Clara (8-5) advances to the Cable Car Classic championship game today against BYU, which beat Idaho State. The Broncos have won the past two title games and three of the past four years.

SANTA CLARA, Calif. (AP) - Jim Howell broke a Santa Clara drought with three consecutive baskets to lift the Broncos to a 66-64 victory over UW-Milwaukee in the opening game of the Cable Car Classic Monday night.
Santa Clara will play the winner of the Brigham Young versus Idaho State game in Tuesday championship tilt at 8 p.m. at the Leavey Center. UW-Milwaukee will play the loser in the consolation game at 6 p.m.
The Broncos have now advanced to five-straight Cable Car Classic championship games and will be looking to equal its longest streak of championships in its own tournament at three with a win in Tuesday's title game.
