Time to talk about the game tonight. This is a big game for the team. The key to this game is going to be the bench again, we need to start to get some production off the bench or it is going to turn into a long leason. From the daily picks on cbs.sportsline.com, Mejia has us losing by 4 (83-79). Here is the link to the game preview on the Valpo Website: www.valpo.edu/athletics/index.php?a=s&sid=2They have a click for a webcast on the Valpo web site, I wonder if this is free or not. Hopefully it works, it will provide a handy stat sheet while listing to Bill.

I have not seen Valpo play this year, but based on recent history, they are usually a bigger team that is very solid at the 3, 4, and 5 positions. This bodes well for UWM as that is where we are strongest. I personally don't think that they have anyone who can match up with Ed, so hopefully we can get him going early. Chris will have to get us off to a good start again - so far, we have had great starts to games, we need to keep that up, especially on the road. Should be a good game tonight.
A few keys:
Their guards turn the ball over A LOT (85 turnovers to 55 assists).
They don't score all that much (62.4 a game)
They don't shoot well (42.9%)
They don't shoot the three well at all (29.8%)
Big lineup (6'3, 6'5, 6'8, 6'9, 6'5)
No one scores a lot of points (one guy in double figures at 11.6)
I like our chances, but UWM will need to play a good game, or it could get ugly. Valpo is a very well coached team that knows how to win.

Some interesting quotes from Homer Drew in this article..... www.post-trib.com/cgi-bin/pto-story/sports/z1/12-10-03_z1_spor_01.html"Drew calls them better than last year’s team, which defeated Valpo 75-61 in Milwaukee." "Drew said in terms of talent, the Panthers are comparable to Marquette. “They’re quick and athletic with a strong power game and excellent shooters,” he said."

Valpo, so far, has been a VERY good defensive team, holding Marquette down to 75 at home and Cincy down to 68. All other teams have scored 64 or less. We can't shoot from deep, our free throw shooting has been marginal at best, and we're really not that big (in comparison to years past). We had a top 25 recruiting class come in this year and they are getting their feet wet, so VU is inconsisten for stretches. Key players for us are Kikas Gomes (an African Olympian), D. Oppland (not spectacular, but solid rebounder/defender and decent scorer), and Jimmie Miles/Miguel Ali Berdiel (both of these guys are great talents, but tend to play out of control and make bad decisions at times...) Roberto Nieves, Ron Howard (a Marquette transfer), and Oumar Sylla are all good slashing scorers, but none of shot up to expectations thus far. Freshman center Kenny Harris (6'11", 300+ lbs) is a load but is still very green. Should be a great game...if Valpo plays UW-M like it did Marquette, I like our chances. If we play like we did Monday against Indiana State it could be a long night. (Check out the Valpo message board at www.voy.com/31005/)

Thanks for the update MoValpo. It is nice to have a someone come over and not start spouting off right away, but rather enter into a legitimate conversation. ;D I didn't see all of Valpo's stats, but I was guessing that their opponents shooting percentage is just about as marginal as their own. Like VU, UWM has a lot of players that are "getting their feet wet" We will play real well in spurts and then just fall apart in others. I have said it before, but I think that this team will go as far as the point position allows us to (assuming we get some bench help/scoring, because without that, all bets are off). Given the fact that UWM scores a lot, it will be an interesting contrast. However can get the other to start playing "their" game will come out on top. UWM obviously want to play a frantic game in the 70's +, and it sounds like VU would much rather have a controlled game in the 50's. How many people are you guys drawing for games these days? Back in the day when Bryce was playing, I remember that you had a pretty decent following. Good luck the rest of the season (not tonight, of course).

I tried to post on the Valpo site but was unable....... Anyone else have better luck? By the way, I think their idea of linking the school they play in the next game at the top (school athletic website and message board) is a great idea. We should look into doing that. EDIT: Looks like their site requires a password to be emailed to you......so we can't say anything over there

Regarding attendance, we are still drawing nice crowds of several thousand fans, averaging 4700 according to the NCAA statistics...right around the same as UWM's 4300.
Regarding game tempo, Valpo would be much better off running the ball with our athletes...we just haven't made great decisions thus far and our offense hasn't flowed on the break or in the halfcourt sets. Considering that we can't shoot well, I'd much rather see us push the ball down the court and take it to the rim rather than set up a half-court offense.
Someone asked about the webcast on the Valpo site...yes it is completely free, you just need some type of media player (AOL media, real player, winamp, windows media, etc) to listen. The game itself airs at 7:05, but there is usually a pre-game on about a half hour earlier.

I understand what you are saying about wanting to push it up and attacking the rim if you don't have any real good shooters. However, if you push it up, you better be able to score more than 65 points a game - UWM, who likes to push it up, is averaging 84 a game......something will have to give. Either you (VU) needs to slow it down and play a more controlled tempo, or shoot considerably better and not turn the ball over as much as you have so far - or else UWM will win big.

I assumed that by having to request a password be mailed to you the process was slow (maybe in an effort to keep trolls out).......guess I was wrong. I am all about instant gratification anyways! ;D haha Guess I will have to register now.

I was just over on the Valpo board and it seems like many of the people over there like us to win. I like that. I do have a few questions? The game is being broadcast in the Valpo area correct? If that is so, why can't channel 41 get the feed? I know the Madison vs. UWGB game is on tonight, but I wouldn't even care if game was tape delayed. Any way, its time for my prediction:
UWM: 82 Vaplo: 70

I think the game is being televised somewhere, but as far as why it isn't being picked up in Milwaukee, I couldn't tell you. Maybe some bar would have it. As long as there is a feed, someone should be able to get it, unless it is on closed circuit campus tv. Prediction: UWM 76 VU 68

Great Mid Major match up tonight!
My line...UWM 77, VALPO 73. I wish I could be down at the game tonight...Valpo is an elite mid major program and I am sure their stadium will be rocking tonight. Hopefully our guys will step up and come home with the victory.
"By the way, I think their idea of linking the school they play in the next game at the top (school athletic website and message board) is a great idea. We should look into doing that."
You bet, that can be done. Tomorrow afternoon I'll have the Madison info available for our game saturday.
BTW, welcome Valpo fans to the Milwaukee discussion board. Feel free to post here as often as you like.
GO MILWAUKEE!
Later, UWMfreak
